WATCH: Mikey Bustos shows us what non-FIlipinos think of our presidentiables

We know that we shouldn’t make judgements based on looks alone, but in politics, that’s how things are usually done, especially during election season.

In Mikey Bustos’ latest YouTube post, he interviewed 12 non-Pinoy millenials from United Kingdom, USA, Colombia, Mexico, China, Thailand, Italy and Korea.

They gave their first impressions on our country’s presidentiables: Mar Roxas, Jejomar Binay, Grace Poe, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, and Rodrigo Duterte.

Keep in mind that people on the video know nothing about Philippine politics. They don’t know how the candidates are portrayed by media. They’ve never even heard any of the five presidentiables speak.

The generalizations were based on nothing but shallow judgements, but truthfully quite amusing. Here are the most flattering — and unflattering — observations.

Binay:
“He looks like he listens to the people and be more emphatic towards people’s struggles.”
“He looks like a vendor selling watermelons in his truck in some streets of China.”
“He looks like Yoda, the character from Star Wars.
“He looks like a religous leader.”

Poe:
“I feel like Grace Poe is trustworthy.”
“She looks like a sweet aunt who is going to make cookies for me.”
“For me she looks like she works at a post office.”
“She looks like a princess!”

Defensor:
“She’s reflecting on how to conquer the world from the Philippines.”
“Female protagonist that you see or the villains that you see in dramas. Or you know like in…Harry Potter.”
“…personality-wise like the female version of Binay.”
“Like a cruel auntie, quite scary.”

Duterte:
“He should be able to solve problems.”
“Was he a drug lord?”
“He looks like he likes to drink.”
“He must be really fortunate, because he has a big nose.”

Roxas:
“He looks like a very caring kind of guy.”
”He looks Latino, right?”
“Businessman, he has that kind of aura.”
“He looks like my psychotheraphst.”

Before you lecture these kids on the history of Philippine politics, keep in mind that this video was produced all in the name of fun.

Our takeaway? This video sends a pretty powerful message: we Filipinos need to know the candidates before picking a president.

Voters who don’t educate themselves sound clueless and silly. Entertaining, but not what our country needs.

We’ve still got a few weeks to go to learn about the five candidates before the May 9 elections. Make sure that you know your president!
